Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (UCIMC)

This local media organization hosts groups that work on several community issues.

There are a number of volunteer opportunities at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (UCIMC), a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice in Champaign County. They host working groups that address several community issues. Here are a few examples:


Library Positions

Books to Prisoners
Accepts book requests from Illinois inmates, and provides them with books that meet their needs. They also have created, stocked, and now staff the Champaign County Jail libraries.

Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center (IMC)
This group is not currently meeting and needs revitalization. This group is responsible for building and maintaining the IMC's progressive library project and archive of media materials; including a renowned zine collection.

Teen Programming Volunteer

Champaign Public Library
Assist with a series of Thursday afternoon programs for teens at the Champaign Public Library. Tasks would include helping staff members set up and take down the program as well as interacting with students during the event.

Assist with special programs and events in the Children Services Department. Duties include helping children with craft projects and games and count attendees.

Adult Computer Class Volunteer
Champaign Public Library
Help library staff instructor by providing extra assistance to customers in the class. Basic knowledge of Internet searching, email, and word processing are necessary along with good communication skills and patience.

Adult Collection Maintenance Volunteer
Champaign Public Library
Provide support to Adult Services staff by maintaining both fiction and nonfiction collections. Duties include straightening books on the shelves and making sure books are in the right order.

Teen Services Volunteer

A volunteer is needed to assist the teen librarian with a variety of tasks including filing, typing, weeding, and checking the database. The hours are flexible within the following parameters: M, Tu, Th 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or Wednesdays from 12:30-3:45 p.m.

Youth Outreach

Education Justice
Tutors are needed to volunteer at the Danville Correctional Center helping with incarcerated students. Volunteers must have a bachelor's degree. It's not necessary to be affiliated with the University of illinois. For information please contact Rebecca at rginsbur@illinois.edu. There will be two informational sessions on Monday October 6th or Thursday October 9th (only need to attend one). Pizza will be served.

Volunteering at Prairienet
Prairienet is always looking for technical support help on various projects. Those with computer hardware/software skills and those who are willing to learn are encouraged to apply by contacting Paul Adams, Director, Prairienet at padams@illinois.edu.

Volunteering at WEFT
WEFT, a noncommercial radio station in Champaign, relies mostly on volunteers for activities ranging from painting walls or installing satellite dishes, to organizing WEFT Fest, communicating with music labels and maintaining its Web site. Volunteer at the Refugee Center in Urbana
East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center (ECIRMAC), an organization that aids the resettlement of refugees and immigrants in the East-Central Illinois area, and facilitates the exchange and preservation of their respective cultures, is looking for volunteers to work in various capacities. Volunteers activities can include registering clients at the center, teaching English or citizenship classes, translating/interpreting, aiding clients with filling out forms in English, data entry, child care or one-on-one tutoring. The center is located at the corner of Green and Birch streets in Urbana.
