CII Grad Assistantships and Fellowships


The Community Informatics Initiative is funded primarily by grants. As of Fall 2009, we are working hard to write and obtain more grants so that we may continue to support students and their work in community informatics. While we are pleased to have received funding from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services for past student support as well as the University for faculty research, those grants will end shortly. We continually seek funding to support assistantships, fellowships, and other configurations of tuition waivers and/or stipends that are open to both master’s and doctoral students. Fellowships—when we are able to offer them--are only available to students in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS). Assistantships are up to 50% (20 hours/week); on-campus GSLIS students will be given first consideration for assistantships.

Limited funding is available if any of the current assistants leave their position. If you have any questions please contact Sharon Irish at slirish@illinois.edu.

WOMEN AND GENDER IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES (WGGP)

2010-2011 Multidisciplinary Award Opportunities

AVAILABLE TO NEW AND CONTINUING GRADUATE STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN Application Deadline:  February 15, 2010

A Full Fellowship is available to new and continuing graduate students in any program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:

RITA AND ARNOLD GOODMAN FELLOWSHIP: The Goodman Fellowship is offered as a full scholarship and stipend to support graduate students in any department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who are working on such issues as literacy, reproductive rights, political participation, economic security, child welfare, and environmental protection. Preference will be given to students whose work promises to make a significant practical contribution to the improvement of women's lives and gender equity in the developing world. One award of up to $14,000 plus a tuition and service fee waiver will be made for the academic year. Eligibility: 1) Be current or newly accepted graduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; 2) Be preparing for a career in the areas targeted by the Fellowship; 3) Have demonstrated academic excellence. Applications must include: 1) A completed application form; 2) A personal statement explaining the applicant's research plans, qualifications, and career goals with clear explanation of how applicant plans to use her/his education and training to improve women's lives. Statements should be five double-spaced pages or about 1,500 words.

3) A current vita/resumé; 4) Current transcript; 5) Three letters of recommendation  [with referee form on page 3 of application].

THE EVELYNE ACCAD INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AWARD:

The Evelyne Accad International Research Award seeks graduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who are working on issues related to women in North Africa and the Middle East.  The award is designed to support travel for research projects in a wide variety of disciplines (such as, Anthropology, Sociology, Literature, Linguistics, Religion, Economics, Health, Fine Arts, Music, and Philosophy) as well as multi-disciplinary work.  An award of up to $1,000 will be given to a graduate student whose work promises to make a significant contribution to the understanding of women's lives in the region.  Applicants should submit the following:

1) A completed application form; 2) A proposal of the research project [five double-spaced pages or approximately 1500 words]; 3) One letter of reference [with referee form on page 3 of application].


Graduate students in any program who select the multidisciplinary graduate minor, Gender Relations in International Development (GRID) are eligible to apply for the following grants: [see GRID enrollment details below*]



DUE AND FERBER INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AWARD FOR DOCTORAL DISSERTATION RESEARCH:

International graduate students from developing countries at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign selecting the Multidisciplinary Minor in Gender Relations in International Development (GRID) [see enrollment details below*] offered by the WGGP program are eligible to apply for grants of up to $1,000 for travel expenses related to their dissertation research addressing international issues of women, gender, and development. Preference will be given to female students whose work promises to make significant contributions to the improvement of women's lives and gender equity in the developing world. One quarter of the funding will be made available to African women. Applicants should submit: 1) A completed application form; 2) A proposal of the dissertation research project; 3) One letter of reference  [with referee form on page 3 of application]; 4) A budget, including other funding applied for or received.


BARBARA A. YATES INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AWARD:

This award supports current or newly enrolled graduate students at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who have demonstrated academic excellence, are enrolled in the WGGP GRID Minor [see enrollment details below*], and are focusing on policy-oriented research on socioeconomic issues related to women and gender in developing countries. Awards may be used for study on campus, conference presentation, or research abroad. One award of $500 will be made for the academic year. Applications should include:  1) A completed application form; 2) A personal statement not to exceed five double-spaced pages describing the applicant's research, qualifications and career goals; 3) A current curriculum vitae; 4) Current transcript; 5) Two letters of recommendation [with referee form on page 3 of application]..

PAGE FELLOW

UIUC is part of a consortium of higher ed institutions called Imagining America (IA) . GSLIS Professor Ann Bishop is UIUC liaison to that group.

Within Imagining America is a program called PAGE fellows (Publicly Active Graduate Education Fellows). Every year, Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life invites graduate students in the arts, humanities, and design with a demonstrated interest in public engagement to apply to be PAGE (Publicly Active Graduate Education) Fellows at Imagining America’s national conference. The 2008 conference will be held in Los Angeles Oct 2nd-Oct 4th. Successful PAGE Fellows receive travel expenses and the conference fee is waived. (deadline has passed for 2008)
